NEW COUPLES
As your wedding day approaches, or your committed decision to share your life with your significant other draws ever closer, there is a nagging sense that something isn't quite right. There are so many questions that need to be answered and yet the internal messages that tell you something is “off” just
seems to get pushed further and further down.
And so you press on, in spite of the increasing discomfort related to issues surrounding poor communication, lack of intimacy, feelings of disconnection and frustration as well as an impending sense that something is wrong. This isn’t unusual as most couples choose to seek help many years later only to discover their partner already has one foot out the door or has become involved with someone else. Unfortunately, by then you learn they have emotionally left the relationship and are now taking legal steps to leave it physically.
Premarital therapy may not only stave off the future hardships a couple may experience as they venture forward, but it can also bring about a deeper more lasting connection with one another in the present. Ultimately, couples therapy can help a couple weather the turbulent storms typically experienced by partners on their journey of life together. Storms such as depression, losses, transitions involving the birth of a child, new job, relocation, a traumatic event, anxiety provoking experiences, or whatever life may throw at them.
If yours is a new or recent relationship, and you struggle with understanding each other more fully, or feel as if something is missing emotionally or physically; rather than ignoring all those unsettling questions and hoping things will turn around, it may best to seek help now, rather than waiting for a crisis to happen. Or worse yet, allowing years of disconnection to accrue; which is unfortunately when most couples seek help. You want to believe it will change but it hasn’t, and you know you need help and don’t quite know where to look.
