EMDR for Children
There is a very powerful type of therapy
known as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
which has been
created
by Dr. Fancine Shapiro to help people heal from trauma.
Now this type of revolutionary therapy, typically found
to be
highly effective for adults who have experienced serious
and negative events, has been tailored to work well with
kids too.
When a traumatic event occurs in a child's
or teen's life, the brain gets blocked, causing the event,
or
events to
get locked
in the brain with the original image, sounds, thoughts, feelings
and body sensations. Whenever the child or teen is reminded
of the the traumatic event, those images, thoughts, feelings,
and
sensations can continue to be triggered. As noted by Dr.
Shapiro, many emotional problems and disorders are manifestations
of
these unprocessed traumatic memories that become stored
in the brain.
One approach found to be very effective in helping the brain
reprocess these traumatic events is EMDR which has also been
found to help alleviate many of the emotional and psychological
disorders that occurred as a result of the trauma. The effectiveness
of EMDR is supported by several controlled studies; in fact
EMDR is the most researched psychotherapeutic treatment
for PTSD (post-traumatic
stress disorder).
The EMDR child friendly version has been
effectively used with children and adolescents experiencing
a wide variety
of emotional
and psychological problems including PTSD, anxiety, phobias,
depression, attachment disorders etc. Research studies
have showed that positive results can be achieved by using
EMDR
with children
and adolescents.
Carol Corcoran, LCMFT, LMFT has gone beyond
her EMDRIA Certified EMDR
Therapy with adults and has completed
additional
training
through the Child Trauma Institute and with Ana
Gomez, LCPC in order to more effectively treat children with
a child
friendly version of EMDR.
